9. Integration and Inclusion

In order for this to work proper park and ride systems need to be installed on all approach roads to the city. Currently a lot o cars entering dublin come from the surrounding counties and outlying new townlands in tthe outer dublin area. A lot of these  are single car occupants and as such all cause traffic jams and a requirement for lots of city area parking often blocking up residential areas closer to the city where they park up and transfer to bus luas or bike.

for examplee on the N1 the nta could create a park and ride near the new metro and transfer all those drivers onto it.

on the N2 a park and ride could be created before the M50 and  a new improved 103  bus service could hurry commuters to town

on the N3 a park and ride built before the blanchardstown exit could transfer passengers onto an express bus into the city

on the n4 a park and ride before liffey valley could put people onto the C spine

on the N7 there is room before newlands cross to create a park and ride with a dedicated express bus service into the city

the N81 is more trickier as theres not many spaces left to build on near the square to transfer commuters to the luas

on the N11 a  park and ride can be built at brides glen so transferring onto the luas

these options have the possibility to remove hundreds if not thousands of cars of the inner m50 circle and could be incentified with pay your parking and have free onward public transport .

To really make this work we also need a better timed public transport system the luas needs to run longer then current maybe up to 2am and start at 4 am for shift workers same as bus routes along major arteries they need to run at shift times.

the new leap 90 fare will help but those travelling from the surrounding counties do not benefit from it  and this needs looking at.

8. Planning for Sustainable Transport

to allow good planning you have to look at why people dont use public tranport

this can be summerised simply

1 no safe school transport in dublin so cars are used

If dublin had a school bus scheme similar to the rest of ireland with only schoolchildren carried then parents would be happy to allow their children to travel as it is not safe  in ireland to allow your child to walk cycle or bus on their own so a lot of parents drive short distances to school often between 500meters and 5 km.

2 cheaper to live outside the city so commuteing by car is the only option as no proper rural service

this is a problem started in the late 90s when people started to move outside county dublin and with few rail or decent bus services they bought cars to get to work i worked in wicklow myself and drove to wicklow town from finglas daily as my job was there.

3 not enough capacity on public transport

this is a big issue if people are left behind at bus stops or find they are always standing on the luas or train they will go back to driving so whatever route serves an area it needs to have the capacity to take at least 20 percent of that areas population at peak time.

4 poor times of operation

this is a big issue for public transport and needs to be seriously looked at when i worked in wicklow i did 3 shifts 8 to 4 4to 12 and 12 to 8 7 days a week none of those shifts were possible by bus or rail so i had to drive so the nta punishes people who work by not providing an alternative to driving. A lot of people work shifts that finish after the last bus and so are forced to drive,

5 high cost of public transport

whilst the transfer90 works great in dublin once you wish to travel outside the area which a lot of workrs do the fares increase dramaticly and often running a car is cheaper.

10. Walking, Accessibility and Public Realm

improved footpaths are key here and we should be looking at a minimum footpath width of 2.5 meters on all  streets. crossings should be made safe by removing obstacables that block the view of both pedestrians and drivers. advertising boards and election posters should either be banned from footpath areas or else placed at least 3 meters of the ground to prevent injury to visually impaired pedestrians. there should be a complete ban on parking on footpaths by any vehicle

more pedestrianised areas are definatly required but they must be either pedestrian only or where deliveries are allowed that it is strictly policed outsie of those hours.

if more areas are pedestrianised we must remember to ensure that those with disabilities and the elderly are not left out for accessing those areas.

11: Cycling and Personal Mobility Devices

to encouage more cycling cycle lanes need to be made cycle friendly which means that those who use accessible bicycles and tricycles can access them which most currently cannot. better cycle parking at bus and rail stations incluing accessible parking is required.

A network of cycle only greenways could be created along side the main arterial roads and motorways that would be for cycles only no pedestrians

when e scooters start to be legalised there may be problems with space in current  cycle lane s as e scooters and bikes fight for the same space .

with bike sharing schemes tricycles are required as the current schemes are excluding to those that cannot cycle unaided.

12. Public Transport (Bus, Light & Heavy Rail)

as said before to increae use of public transport we need to extend the operating hours and to increase capacity . Dublin bus has used a fleet of high capacity triaxles on several routes and these are been replaced by smaller capacity buss on the same timetable wich does not make sence.  with rail and the long lead in time to purchasing manufacturing and commisoning rail carraigs can the nta look to the future and look at buying new carraiges at the rate of 10 percent extra per year spo that over 10 years the fleet gets doubled and capacity issues will then shrink.

more bus priority is required and possibly more bus only streets to be done in the city

13. Road

no new roads should be built unless they are for public transport routes current roads should be looked at for usage and damage. more roads should be brought under speed control and more traffic calming measures used.

where possible roads that are used as short cuts should have the short cuts removed

when utilitie companies dig up roads they should be forced to reinstate the road properly.

potholes affect everyone including cyclists and pedestrians and a national program should be set up to remove them

15. Freight, Delivery and Servicing

freight deliveries are always going to be an issue.

the best way to get freight elivered outside of peak times is to encourage companies to have nighttime opening for goods . a lot of trucks have to deliver in the city centre after 9am as these companies wont accept deliveries beforehand as they wont pay staff night rates so i might need  abit of persuasion.

another option is all deliveries within the canal area are done by small vans or licenced delvery bikes and if you need a truck delivery and wont allow a night delivery that you pay a fee to the council that costs more then a staff members wage

freight hubs can be built outside the city and rail used more to bring freight to the port for onward distribution within the city a new warehouse built at north wall could take a couple of trains every night with city centre deliveries been sent to it with onward small van deliveries out of it.

to discourage trucks from the city more 3 tonne roads could be created and all toll roads be made free for freight carrying vehicles to discourage using national roads into the city.

16. Climate Action Management

in this area we need to remove as much pollution from the city area as possible this can be done as said before by transferring freight to rail from trucks and by removing a smany cars from the city as possible by proper hubs for park and ride.

another issue we face is with the drive to more electric buses luas and e bikes e cars e scooters that we need to find new ways to power these vehicles built in solar units on bus van roofs can help to recharge these vehicles when parked and should be looked for more in the future. Also there are trials of realtime units with solar panels and these should be rolled out further accross the city.

bus shelters are a great item to have both pollinator gardens installed on them as well as having solar power added to power their lighting

if all the rail and bus stations were fully roofed over and solar panels installed it would help to charge both buses in depots and the dart service

19. Next Steps

it is important that no matter what is done that it is future proofed in the past we have removed rail lines and bus services only to realise now that they are required the green line luas is a great example. with bus connects we lose a lot of estate routes so these need monitoring and if required maybe reinstating in the future
