17. Strategy Outcomes

This draft strategy is a shameful betrayal of our country's youth and our responsibility to avoid catastrophic climate change.

The target of reducing carbon emissions from transport in the GDA from 3.2 MtCO2eq in 2018 to c.1.0 MtCO2eq in 2042 is not compatible with our obligations under the Paris Agreement or our legal commitment to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050 at the latest.

Urban transport is the low-hanging fruit of climate action in Ireland. If we can't get this right we might as well just admit we're not serious about doing our fair share to limit global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius.

The target of reducing the modal share of cars to 48.6% of all trips by 2042 is embarrassingly unambitious. Seville reduced its modal share of cars by 27% in ten years; for us to aim for just a 9% reduction in 20 years shows a complete lack of seriousness about the climate emergency.
