1. Introduction
I called on the National Transport Authority to immediately address the issue of high fares for train users on the Sligo Line to Enfield.
If we are to encourage people to leave the car at home and use public transport then we need a fairer fare structure for the Sligo Line passengers at Enfield.
It is so frustrating, forcing us back into our cars for the commute rather than incentivising us to commute by train. If Naas and Sallins are on the short hop zone, so should Enfield! Enfield is in the greater Dublin area in practical terms as a very large proportion of its residents commute to work in Dublin.
It’s beyond frustrating. Also the lack of leap card facilities at Enfield station is another glaring shortfall.
The monthly rate for an adult from Enfield to Connolly is €237, whilst a mere ten minutes down the line at Kilcock it is €130. In the 2016 census for Enfield only 34 people used the train to get to work, while 123 used bus but a whopping 976 used cars. I look forward to the publication of this year’s census next year which will prove that the population of Enfield and south Meath has increased. Data from 2016 is very out of date.
