The National Transport Authority (NTA) is proposing to improve Routes 350 and 333 and we would like to hear your views on our plans. This enhancement is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.
The purpose of the amendment is to:
Increase the frequency of Route 350 to every 90-120 minutes, with new evening services.
Improve travel times for passengers in South, West and North Clare by making Routes 350 and 333 more direct.
Introduce New Route 338 between Ennis and Ennistymon via Corofin, Kilfenora and Lisdoonvarna to expand access to The Burren and reduce travel times between Lisdoonvarna and Ennis.
The NTA intends to implement these improved routes and services in mid-2025.
Route Proposals
The NTA intends to re-shape the current Galway-Lisdoonvarna-Ennis corridor by making the following routing changes:
Route 350’s current diversion between Lisdoonvarna and Ballyvaughan along the N67 instead of the R477 via Fanore will be made permanent, along with changes to the stops at Maree, Nogra, New Quay and Doolin Pier.
Route 350C will become a permanent route and replace Route 350 along the R477 via Fanore. The route will also be extended to Kinvara via Ballyvaughan, New Quay and Nogra.
Route 333 will be rerouted to run between Ennistymon and Ennis via Inagh instead of Kilfenora and Corofin.
New Route 338 will run between Ennis and Ennistymon via Lisdoonvarna, Corofin and Kilfenora, replacing Route 333’s service to Corofin and Kilfenora.
Please see the map below showing the proposed network.
Specific Route Descriptions
Route 350
We propose to increase the frequency of Route 350 to every 90-120 minutes across the day, with new evening services and better connections with rail services in Galway and Ennis.
Route 350 is currently on diversion between Ballyvaughan and Lisdoonvarna via the N67 National Road due to Uisce Éireann roadworks closing the R477 road at Lisnanard, near Ballyvaughan. A Route 350C shuttle service is currently in place between Lisnanard (for Ballyvaughan) and Lisdoonvarna serving Fanore and other stops along the R477 to replace Route 350 along this section.
We propose to keep Route 350 running along the N67, because this routing is faster and due to low passenger numbers along the R477. We also propose the following changes to some stops on Route 350 that are served once a day:
Maree – removed from Route 350 and replaced with a TFI Local Link Galway Demand Responsive Transport service.
Nogra – removed from Route 350 and replaced with an extension of Route 350C.
New Quay - removed from Route 350 and replaced with an extension of Route 350C.
Doolin Pier – removed from Route 350 without replacement (due to difficulties in accessing the stop, especially in summertime). Route 350 will continue to serve the nearby Doolin Hotel stops.
Altogether, our proposals mean Route 350 will run more frequently and offer faster journeys for most passengers.
Route 350C
Route 350C is a shuttle service currently in place between Lisnanard (for Ballyvaughan) and Lisdoonvarna serving Fanore and other stops to replace Route 350 along the R477 whilst roadworks are ongoing.
We propose to keep running Route 350C after the road closure has ended and extend it to/from Kinvara via Ballyvaughan and New Quay, with some journeys also serving Nogra. We propose Route 350C to run four times per day per direction and offer connections with Route 350 at key times of day.
Route 333
We propose to reroute Route 333 away from Kilfenora and Corofin and instead follow Route 350 by operating between Ennistymon and Ennis via Inagh. We propose that the number of journeys per day per direction will remain the same Monday to Saturday, with an enhanced Sunday service.
This will reduce journey times and introduce a more direct path between Ennis and southwest County Clare.
New Route 338
We propose to introduce New Route 338 between Ennistymon and Ennis via Lisdoonvarna, Kilfenora and Corofin, replacing Route 333 through Kilfenora and Corofin.
New Route 338 is proposed to operate six journeys per day per direction. It will improve connections to The Burren, as well as increasing the number of direct journeys per day between Lisdoonvarna and Ennis.
Consultation on these proposals will run for four weeks, closing at 4pm on Thursday 6th February 2025.
