With plans for up to 9,500 homes and a forecast population of 23,000 people, Clonburris is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Approximately 1,500 homes have already been built, with further development including the provision of supporting infrastructure such as roads, schools and community open space being delivered at pace.
Clonburris is currently served by two rail stations, Kishoge and Clondalkin Fonthill, providing direct connections to the city centre. Service provision to these stations will be improved significantly with the delivery of DART+ South West which will see increased frequency and capacity when fully implemented.
Existing bus services cross the site at Grange Castle Road, Fonthill Road and Ninth Lock Road providing access to the bus network. Improving connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists through the site and to adjoining areas is a focus of active travel investment including the provision of new rail and canal bridges in the coming years.
As part of the development of Clonburris, the introduction of additional bus services will be essential to meet the needs of the growing community. Working with South Dublin County Council, the NTA has identified the requirement for new bus routes to be delivered to ensure access to public transport for residents, within reasonable walking distance.
In designing the proposed new routes, the phasing of development at Clonburris has been considered. The main thoroughfare through Clonburris, South Link Street (SLS), has been designed as the primary bus corridor. The SLS is set to be fully open by 2029. In advance of this, the eastern section of the SLS from the R136 is constructed and is expected to become open and operational by the end of 2027. The planned introduction of the new bus routes will therefore be phased to align with the opening and operational availability of the required infrastructure.
The Proposal
We have identified that three new bus routes are required to serve Clonburris. These will operate as part of the Dublin City bus network typically running from 06:00 to 00:00, 7 days a week. The services will be operated by low-floor, fully accessible, high-capacity buses. Fares will be consistent with existing Zone 1 fares and will be included as part of the TFI 90-Minute Fare. New fully accessible bus stops will be provided, each showing timetables, route diagrams and other useful information about the service.
L70 Adamstown, Grange Castle, Red Cow Luas
This new local route between Adamstown and Red Cow is planned to use existing roads and streets. It will provide public transport coverage to currently unserved areas while also providing new connections for Adamstown and Clonburris. It will serve the new housing at Herons Lock off the R120, the large employment hub at Grange Castle, the rail stations at Kishoge and Clondalkin Fonthill via Thomas Omer Way before passing through Clondalkin Village and terminating at Red Cow Luas.
L71 Adamstown, Clonburris, Red Cow Luas
This new local route is planned to bring service to the eastern half of Clonburris via South Link Street. On route it will return bus services to Adamstown Avenue making use of the existing bus lanes. The route will also provide access to Kishoge and Clondalkin Fonthill rail stations before using Ninth Lock Road on its way to Clondalkin and Red Cow Luas.
77 Adamstown, Clonburris, City Centre
This new high-frequency service will provide direct city centre connections through the heart of Clonburris along South Link Street. Starting at Adamstown it will also provide additional public transport options for Adamstown and the wider community via interchange from the orbital routes it will interconnect with.
Detailed timetabling work has yet to be undertaken for these services, but it is envisaged the minimum level of weekday, midday service provision would be as follows:
L70 – every 30 minutes
L71 – every 30 minutes
77 – every 15 minutes
Frequency of service may vary at peak times and also at weekends.
